| My country and my city Portugal is the most ocidental country in the “old continent”. Its one of the oldest nations in europe as it was founded in 1143. In history Portugal remains as the country that discovered the maritime way to all the world. We where the first to arrive by sea to Brasil – Pedro Alvares Cabral -, India – Bartolomeu Dias -, America ( Colombo was portuguese altought financed by the Spanish crown) and to take the first tour around the world – Fernão Magalhães. Altought small in size Portugal was and still is a great nation with a rich history. We have 10 million people plus some 5 million all around the world. Our only border is with Spain and has about 1200 km of lenght. On the other side we have the atlantic ocean. Our 800 km coast is full of beautiful beaches to surf, windsurf, dive or just enjoy the good sun we have. Besides the mainlaind we have plus 10 islands: Madeira (South, close to Morocco); Açores (In the midle of the ocean and composed by 7 islands); and the two virgin islands. More recently we have entered the EU in 1986 and the Euro in 2001. Main cities are: Lisbon; Porto; Coimbra; Faro; Évora; Setúbal. Portugal is known internationaly by the good wine (PORTO), good weather all year, Bullfights, good food – mainly Bacalhau -, and friendly people. The city where i lived is Lisbon, portuguese capital city. Its called the city of the seven hills due to the natural boundaries it has. On the other city river Tagus pass by. It has 2 million inhabitants and it’s the cultural, political and economical center of Portugal.
